Orientation to Cave Rescue Seminar
November 6-7, 2021
This is an introduction to cave rescue. Topics covered include Incident Command System and how it applies to cave rescues, medical management, hypothermia, patient packaging, extreme situations, the cave environment, communications, media interaction, search, and more. There will be both classroom and hands on instruction and the students will run a mock incident.
There are no prerequisites for this class. This is designed for anyone who has an interest in cave rescue management and operations. Both recreational cavers and emergency response personnel will benefit from this class.
Those under 18 will need to call the seminar coordinator to make prior arrangements to attend. A parent or guardian is required onsite at all times.
The seminar cost (per person) is $40 for NSS Members and $60 for non-NSS Members.
- The IKC is offering scholarships for a limited number of members as well as First Responders, on a first come-first served basis.
IKC Members $25 discount (for the first 25 members)
First Responders (Police, Fire, EMS, ICOs, etc) : full ride scholarship (for the first 10 members)
All seminar instructors are volunteers to help keep costs low.

All class equipment will be provided except for personal equipment. Students are required to have the following available for inspection at check in:
UIAA or CE approved climbing helmet with a three or four point suspension system, nonelastic chinstrap.
Three sources of light, at least two must be electric, one helmet mounted and one more capable of being helmet mounted. All should be sufficient to allow you to exit the cave. Carbide will NOT be allowed when working near patients or in close quarters with groups of people, but is acceptable for use in other conditions.
Rugged clothing. Sturdy, lugged sole boots. Gloves.
Water bottle, at least one quart. A small, heavy-duty pack for carrying personal gear underground.
20' of 1" Tubular webbing
Plastic garbage bags (contractor size works best)
Wrist watch to be worn underground (cell phones for time keeping aren’t recommended)
Paper/pencil for underground use (i.e. small notebook with golf pencil)
Saturday: Check in @7:30am. Seminar 8am-6:00pm with a break for lunch. Lunch is on your own. Bring kneepads, gloves, and clothes you can get dirty for afternoon session.
Sunday: Exercises from 8am-4pm at a local cave. Horizontal cave gear required. Be self-sufficient for that time period—we do not break for lunch.
